You aren’t as happy as you could be, and you wish you were happier. Maybe you feel like happiness is out of reach because of circumstances outside of your control. Maybe blaming those circumstances is easier than facing the awful, terrifying truth: your happiness is determined by your actions. You can’t wish or blame your way to happiness. And when you do take action, the type of actions you choose really matters. You can’t scroll, or stream, or drink your way to happiness. Happiness is a caused state. You must earn your happiness by doing actions that cause it. You probably already know some of the things you could do to become happier. But you don’t do them. Many of us repeatedly choose things that make us miserable more reliably than they make us happy. Why? Partly because our desires are out of whack. In the moments that matter most, we desire things that would lead to misery and dread things that would lead to happiness.
We dread (don’t desire) exercise, we therefore don’t do it, and are left feeling regretful and disappointed in ourselves.
We dread hard work, we don’t do it, and are left feeling anxious and stressed.
We desire junk food or alcohol, indulge, and are left wondering what the hell was I thinking???
In short, we are stuck.
